What is your reason to join with Teach For Indonesia?

It was actually an invitation from my friend. They have always been really interested in volunteering program. At that time, I figured that I were to stay in Indonesia for half a year, I might as well make it meaningful. Furthermore, I think that TFI could provide me an opportunity to emerse in the local community, understanding the locals. Besides, I love to share my knowledge especially my English knowledge to others.

What is your opinion about Teach For Indonesia?

It was challenging for me at first. Although I am Malaysian, M’sia & Indonesia share almost the same language, however I had a little struggle to communicate with the children with my limited Bahasa Indonesia Knowledge, let alone explaining the English terms in Bahasa to them. However, as time passed, I slowly get used to the way of teaching, the children and I could feel it’s easier for me to approach the children. They became less resistance towards me as compared to our initial encounter, where they were shy to ask me question due to the communication barrier. They had to ask in English which make them shy. Thru this program, it allows me to brush up my Indonesian language too.

What activities have you done in Teach For Indonesia?

I have taught the children about “Days of the week and months of the year”, played interactive games that are based on the topic of the day, danced to English – Kids – Music with the children just to name a few of the activities I have done in class with the children.
